[Independant] A horsebox has caught fire on a major road near Cambridge, sending flames shooting more than 20ft into the air.

A terrified horse was rescued from the vehicle by its owner and left standing on the carriageway of the A14, which was closed at the Histon exit.

[Daily Mail] This is the dramatic moment eight people worked together to rescue a horse that was stuck in a pond.

The animal, named Diego, wandered down to the brown, murky water in the village of Shipley in West Sussex to have a drink.

But after cooling down, it found it was unable to climb up the pond’s steep grass bank.

Its owner called the RSPCA after spotting the brown horse ‘stumbling and tripping’ as it desperately tried to escape from the water.

Two RSPCA officers then worked with six firefighters to rescue the animal last Wednesday afternoon.

‘We are extremely grateful to the fire service for their help. There is no way we could have helped the horse without them.

Brownie works in a relaxed correct outline on the flat and has three uphill paces.

He has mainly competed in British Show Jumping with our team but has also taken part in Pony Club & School Teams as well and is an absolutely fantastic cross country pony, happily jumping all coloured, natural fences and water ditches etc., without any problems

Brownie delivers a lovely dressage test and is a true gentleman to hack out on his own or in company remaining totally calm, he is never strong.

He is good to shoe, clip, and for the dentist and he is fully up to date with vacs and physio

Very sadly for sale as Libby has now outgrown him and has also been concentrating on her GCSE’s

For us it is an extremely sad sale and an extra special competitive home is required for this talented little lad who would perfectly suit a child coming off 128’s or 138’s.

He would also make a top class pony club pony.

Equi-Trek Show Treka L For Sale in Metallic Astral Black

This superb example is only 4 years old and is in superb condition and only used a total of 10 times due to the owner having back problem and is now moving to a 3.5 tonne horsebox.

It was made to the owners exacting specification with a most of optional extras fitted. Originally priced at well over £13,000 from Equi-Trek. The stylish Show-Treka horse trailer carries two horses, rear facing in safety and comfort with a totally separate living area fitted with kitchen and seats which converts into bunks for overnight stays. These horse trailers also has a separate lockable tack locker that can be accesses from the outside of the trailer.

EquiTrek Show Treka L For Sale in Metallic Astral Black2

In addition, the Show-Treka horse trailer also has safety ramp gates for safer loading and rear facing travel for the comfort of your horse. The ramp on the offside makes it safer for loading as it prevents the handler getting trapped between horse and the trailer wall due to leading from the near side, plus less chance of been unable to drop the ramp due to obstruction such as under a bridge or against a high bank. In addition, the low, wide side ramp eliminates the chance of the horse flying backwards once loaded and making it much safer for one person to load a horse when alone.

[This is Wiltshire] Stable lads from Manton have received counselling after their horsebox was involved in a horrific motorway crash in which two people and a horse died.

The horsebox from Brian Meehan’s yard was badly damaged in the crash on the M11 on Thursday afternoon as it travelled to an evening meeting at Newmarket.

Mr Meehan, who has trained on the Sangster-owned estate since 2006, said: “The whole thing has been a terrible shock to our yard and it will take a while for people to fully recover. Our Paint Pony Pistolero died on Thursday evening at the Newmarket Equine Hospital.

“Although he was called a Paint Pony that is actually a breed of horse in America he was actually 16.2 hh horse that had been with us for eight years.

“He was used to settle our race horses both at home and on the course. He was a great character.

“He was Western-trained and was a treat to ride and children, in particular, used to love him. He was, without doubt, one of our stable stars, and we shall all miss him greatly.”

“The staff on board the box were traumatised and in a state of shock after the accident.

“It was an horrific incident on the motorway and we would like to send our sincerest condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives. They are foremost in our thoughts.”

His four male stable lads and the horsebox driver have now received counselling from experts from Racing Welfare and are back at work.

[Horse and Hound] A horse owner from West Sussex is urging other riders to take care when loading their horses, after an accident in a horsebox.

The pony became stuck over the partition

Bank Holiday plans for a sunny hack went disastrously wrong for owner Paige Howard whose pony became stuck over the partition in his horsebox before they had even left the yard on 5th May.

Paige had just shut the ramp after loading her New Forest-cross Charlie, with his stable-mate Guinness, when he panicked as the top door was being closed.

“He is a dream to load and travel,” said Paige. “But [on Monday] he jumped over the front partition halfway into the changing/storage area.”

Paige and Guinness’s owner Jane Pay tried to calm Charlie down to no avail. He pulled a chunk of Jane’s hair out, and some skin from Paige’s arm.

“He was thrashing about and pawing his front feet in the air as he made it over the partition,” said Paige, who was “removed from the scene” with Jane by friends at the yard due to shock. “Before we knew it, he was stuck.”

The vet and a 15-strong team from Horley fire brigade arrived 45mins later and Charlie was sedated in order for the firemen to cut the lorry open to free him.

[Equihunter] Our latest project is about to roll off of the production line next week destined for a well known riding school based in Essex.

Equihunter Arena 3.5t Horsebox in cream with green and gold trim

The Equihunter Arena 3.5t Horsebox in cream with green and gold trim

This build is finished to our customer specific instructions and is completed in a beautiful rich cream paint made by BMW called “Pepper White”, with green and gold trim that matches the corporate logo of the riding school.

This Arena is built upon a 2011 Fiat Ducato chassis with only 38,000 miles on the clock.

We’ve also added special features like internal LED lighting with blue night running lights as we have on our 7.5 tonne Equihunter Endurance lorry.

dsc_5553

As fitted to the Equihunter Endurance

This ensures that the horses benefit from having a lit journey during the hours of darkness, but can also see out through the windows at assign traffic, and thus are less likely to be spooked but the sudden appearance of other vehicles headlights.

Other features include LED down lighters mounted above the rear door plus another set of LED down lights mounted high up on the drivers side of the vehicle to light the tie up area for those late evenings preparing to return home after dusk has fallen.

Here’s a gallery of images to show this Arena off….

[Equihunter] We check on our horses every day, but the next time you are at the yard, why not also spare a thought about the condition of your horsebox as well.

Please ask yourself this question before you set off… Picture courtesy “Four Counties Insurance Brokers Ltd” – Specialist in Horsebox Insurance & Breakdown Cover

This is the time of year when we are all coming out of our winter hibernation and starting to think about getting out and about again regularly to the shows, competitions and to training.

Whatever vehicle you drive it’s also the time of year that your horsebox deserves that much needed care and attention in terms of an annual inspection and some routine maintenance.

Whether you are just planning a day out or even going for a short stay away, it’s important to note that by following a few simple basic steps you can help to save yourself from the awful experience of breaking down on the road and have the worry, stress and dangers that this event can bring.

It goes without saying that an annual maintenance check is a must. You may even have an MOT or Plating test coming up, in which case you will be assured that your horsebox repair and maintenance specialist will be covering the essentials, but if this usually happens during the summer months, please don’t take it for granted that all is OK after what may have been months of relative inactivity with your vehicle over the winter.

REMEMBER: ALWAYS GET PROFESSIONAL ADVICE IF YOU ARE AT ALL UNSURE WHAT TO DO.

Don’t wait until it is too late: Image Courtesy “The Organisation of Horsebox & Trailer Owners“

Here are some helpful tips of things you possibly can manage yourself…..
  • Check you are road legal, note the expiry dates on your insurance, test certificate and road tax.
  • Make sure that you have adequate and in date breakdown and recovery insurance, don’t just rely on luck, it’s just not worth it.
  • Before you set off, make sure you have written access to important emergency numbers, like your vet, your emergency breakdown company and have your insurance details to hand.
  • Please ensure that you have a working mobile phone on board with a full charge before you set off. If you can take your phone charger with you that can be plugged into t a working power outlet in the cab.
  • Make sure the obvious things work like headlight, brake lights and indicators all work properly, have someone help you while you operate the controls
  • Check the condition of your vehicle’s tyres, especially if you haven’t used your horsebox over the winter.  look out for reduced air pressure and visible signs of wear such as cracks in the side walls.
  • In the engine area perform a few simple checks like making sure your windscreen washer level is full, check your engine oil level as well and ensure your radiator coolant is at the correctly indicated level.
  • If your vehicle has wooden floors, always check regularly for signs of rot and weakness

If you are unsure of how do perform any of these checks please, please seek advice from a professional mechanical engineer, preferably with a specialty in dealing with equestrian transport vehicles or seek help from competent and experienced person that knows what they are looking out for.

Finally why not visit the ‘Local Rider‘ magazine website and take a look at their great check sheet they have produced that lists the 10 most common reasons horseboxes fail an MOT test. The Local Rider website has some really great advice here…..

Another source of helpful information comes from VOSA in the form of a 26 page guide, compiled with the help of BE, BD, BHS, BEF, H&H and PRP Rescue Service
