[News North Wales] A HEROIC passer-by rescued a horse from a trailer engulfed in flames.

Father-of-two Colin Davies showed no regard to his own safety. He said afterwards that he could not have lived with himself if he had done nothing and the horse had died.

The 38-year-old, from Strand Walk, Holywell, was leaving Burger King in Pentre Halkyn with his two teenage sons, moments before spotting the vehicle fire on the A55 at about 3pm on Bank Holiday Monday.

Mr Davies, who has a horse named Harvey himself, pulled over to assist as the flames took hold.

“I saw this horse box on fire. I’ve got a horse myself so I pulled over,” he said. “I wanted to try and help.

“There was a woman and her two children at the side of the road. She said they had to leap out of the vehicle because it caught fire.

“I asked if there was a horse in the horse box and she said there was but the fire service had advised her not to approach the vehicle.

“I tried to open the gate.

“I couldn’t get the hydraulics to work.

“Other people pulled over then there were three of us trying to pull the gate open.”

Mr Davies said the fire service arrived, and officers helped him open the gate to gain entry, as other officers battled the flames.

“I told the fire service that I’m a horse owner and if they could get the back open, I’d go in and get the horse,” he said.

“There was a lot of black smoke.

“I climbed in and unhooked the horse and got her out.

“She was crying out at first but then she was fine.

“The woman’s daughter at the side of the road was beside herself.

[Horse and Hound] A horse owner from West Sussex is urging other riders to take care when loading their horses, after an accident in a horsebox.

The pony became stuck over the partition

Bank Holiday plans for a sunny hack went disastrously wrong for owner Paige Howard whose pony became stuck over the partition in his horsebox before they had even left the yard on 5th May.

Paige had just shut the ramp after loading her New Forest-cross Charlie, with his stable-mate Guinness, when he panicked as the top door was being closed.

“He is a dream to load and travel,” said Paige. “But [on Monday] he jumped over the front partition halfway into the changing/storage area.”

Paige and Guinness’s owner Jane Pay tried to calm Charlie down to no avail. He pulled a chunk of Jane’s hair out, and some skin from Paige’s arm.

“He was thrashing about and pawing his front feet in the air as he made it over the partition,” said Paige, who was “removed from the scene” with Jane by friends at the yard due to shock. “Before we knew it, he was stuck.”

The vet and a 15-strong team from Horley fire brigade arrived 45mins later and Charlie was sedated in order for the firemen to cut the lorry open to free him.

Crews were called to Martland Park, Wigan, on Tuesday morning after receiving reports of a horse being unable to get out of the River Douglas.

Water rescue teams worked for three hours with ropes and an inflated fire hose to rescue 16-year-old mare Molly. Station manager Ben Levy said the rescue was “difficult” due to “the heavy rain we’ve had recently”.

He said members of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) had initially attempted to rescue the horse, but had been unsuccessful, so had called Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service for help.

Two specialist water rescue crews attended the incident and used the hose “to create a barrier to guide Molly to a safe area before getting strops round her,” he said.

He added the mare had been moved down the river to a “suitable spot” before being walked out of the water. “It took three hours in total to rescue Molly from the river [which] was quite deep because it was flooded due to the heavy rain we’ve had recently,” he said.

“The rescue was difficult not only due to flooded river, but also because of the very steep and muddy banks, but she came out and is safe and well thanks to the efforts of our crews and the RSPCA.”
