War Horse rescued from A303 breakdown and transported to Sherborne event in style: Western Gazette

≈ Comments Off on War Horse rescued from A303 breakdown and transported to Sherborne event in style: Western Gazette

[Western Gazette] Queues of people lined up outside Sherborne Abbey on Saturday as they waited for Joey, the life-size horse puppet from the hit production War Horse, to make his guest appearance as part of the Sherborne Abbey Festival.

But little did they know, Joey the horse almost didn’t arrive at all after the prop trailer carrying the puppet broke on the A303.

Liz Burt, of the organising committee, said: “The props trailer carrying Joey had to pull over on the A303 after a wheel broke –it was completely unrepairable damage. They had a lucky escape not to have an accident and had to pull over somewhere near Mere.”

The chances of Joey arriving looked slim but Jacqui Baker, the wife of festival artistic director John, wasted no time and secured an even more appropriate vehicle to transport Joey to the event – a horse box.

Her next door neighbour and racing horse breeder Doug Procter, his wife Lucy and ten-year old-son Will, who own the company The Glanvilles Stud, came to the rescue.

War Horse Joey Rescued

Mr Procter said: “I got the call when I was sitting in the barber’s chair getting my hair cut. My next door neighbour said the National Theatre truck had broken down and was there any way we could help? I thought – what on earth is she talking about? I phoned my wife Lucy and she and my son Will jumped into our horse trailer and went to pick up Joey immediately. They turned up with the trailer, transferred all of the puppetry gear and headed straight for Sherborne.”……

The first edition opens with a full page narrative from Colin Poole and Bryan Shear of how Cashjumping came about and what it’s aims are.

Colin takes up the story …. “When I first thought of the concept of CashJumping only a few short weeks ago and discussed it with Bryan neither one of us envisaged that it would be so successful so quickly. We were of course aware of the spiralling costs of diesel, fees ,etc for the affiliated riders and the growing unrest amongst a number of affiliated riders that perceived their association to be unresponsive and elitist.

The difficulty was that there was no real viable alternative. Affiliated riders perceived that unaffiliated competitions were poorly run with inferior officials and equipment. Unaffiliated riders were quite often apprehensive to bridge the gap between unaffiliated competitions and affiliated ones.

CashJumping was designed to bridge that gap and make good quality competition open and affordable to all. Show centres must meet minimum quality standards and all officials have to be approved by us. This seems to be working affiliated riders are attending the shows and the unaffiliated people are discovering that
they can compete in the same classes and have the benefit of winning cash!”

There are nice pictorial articles featuring the first CashJumping events to be held…. The show held at Blue Sky Equestrian Centre, Golden Cross Equestrian Centre and Beaver Hall are all featured….
