[This is Wiltshire] Stable lads from Manton have received counselling after their horsebox was involved in a horrific motorway crash in which two people and a horse died.

The horsebox from Brian Meehan’s yard was badly damaged in the crash on the M11 on Thursday afternoon as it travelled to an evening meeting at Newmarket.

Mr Meehan, who has trained on the Sangster-owned estate since 2006, said: “The whole thing has been a terrible shock to our yard and it will take a while for people to fully recover. Our Paint Pony Pistolero died on Thursday evening at the Newmarket Equine Hospital.

“Although he was called a Paint Pony that is actually a breed of horse in America he was actually 16.2 hh horse that had been with us for eight years.

“He was used to settle our race horses both at home and on the course. He was a great character.

“He was Western-trained and was a treat to ride and children, in particular, used to love him. He was, without doubt, one of our stable stars, and we shall all miss him greatly.”

“The staff on board the box were traumatised and in a state of shock after the accident.

“It was an horrific incident on the motorway and we would like to send our sincerest condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives. They are foremost in our thoughts.”

His four male stable lads and the horsebox driver have now received counselling from experts from Racing Welfare and are back at work.

Part of the M11 has been “completely blocked” following the crash on the northbound carriageway, between Harlow and Bishop’s Stortford, at 14:15 BST.

Two people in a car have died. A driver and passenger of another car have been taken to hospital in Cambridgeshire.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, Essex Police said.

Police have advised people to avoid the area as tailbacks stretched to four miles (6.5km).

The northbound carriageway has been closed.

About the Society

Welcome to the Surrey Spring Show. This Show has been established by a group of friends who have all been touched by cancer. The idea to raise money with a charity show began when dear friends Sam Holland & Sue Alkin were both diagnosed.

The Show is being run to raise funds for The Royal Marsden Hospital and St.Catherine’s Hospice (Crawley).

We all know of Cancer, it happens to other people. The Surrey Spring Show has been established by a group of friends who have all been touched by this disease. The idea to raise money with a charity show began when dear friends Sam Holland & Sue Alkin were both diagnosed.

The Show is being run to raise funds for The Royal Marsden Hospital (where Sam continues to receive her excellent treatment); and St.Catherines Hospice (Crawley) that cared so wonderfully for Sue. The committee and everyone involved have given their time for free and every penny of the proceeds will go to the two charities. Thank you for your kind and generous support.

Pony straddled over horsebox partition: H&H

[Horse and Hound] A horse owner from West Sussex is urging other riders to take care when loading their horses, after an accident in a horsebox.

The pony became stuck over the partition

Bank Holiday plans for a sunny hack went disastrously wrong for owner Paige Howard whose pony became stuck over the partition in his horsebox before they had even left the yard on 5th May.

Paige had just shut the ramp after loading her New Forest-cross Charlie, with his stable-mate Guinness, when he panicked as the top door was being closed.

“He is a dream to load and travel,” said Paige. “But [on Monday] he jumped over the front partition halfway into the changing/storage area.”

Paige and Guinness’s owner Jane Pay tried to calm Charlie down to no avail. He pulled a chunk of Jane’s hair out, and some skin from Paige’s arm.

“He was thrashing about and pawing his front feet in the air as he made it over the partition,” said Paige, who was “removed from the scene” with Jane by friends at the yard due to shock. “Before we knew it, he was stuck.”

The vet and a 15-strong team from Horley fire brigade arrived 45mins later and Charlie was sedated in order for the firemen to cut the lorry open to free him.
